prince2 Stage Boundary

What is the purpose of this PRINCE2 process?

This process provides the board with sufficient information to make a decision on whether or not to commit further resources and continue with the project to the next stage.   There are two ways into this process, either because one stage is nearing the end and the next stage needs to be planned, or because there has been a significant problem and the project board has asked that some re-planning takes place, in the form of an exception plan.

What activities does PRINCE2 recommend?

  • Plan the next stage      OR      Product an exception plan
  • Update the project plan
  • Update the Business Case

How to tailor PRINCE2 ‘Controlling a Stage’

What is the purpose of this PRINCE2 process?

There are two primary things going on in this process.

Firstly – ‘normal progress’ which means instigating getting the specialist / technical work done through issue of work instructions (on a PRINCE2 project these are called Work Packages’), monitoring progress and reporting to the project board.   This process ensures that work on specialist products does not start until the project manager authorises it.

Second – looking out for and handling problems (risks, issues and changes).

  • Authorise a Work Package
  • Review Work Package Status
  • Receive Completed Work Package
  • Review the Stage Status
  • Report Highlights
  • Capture and Examine Issues and Risks
