How to tailor PRINCE2?

PRINCE2 Learning Tree

So what do we mean by the term ‘Tailoring PRINCE2’?

PRINCE2 is a wonderfully rich box of tools, techniques and processes.  It offers a “painting by numbers” scalable approach for repeatable project success.  However, PRINCE2 itself recognises that projects are not homogenous, and consequently PRINCE2 needs to be tailored to meet the specific needs of your project and its associated project environment. The problem is PRINCE2 does not say very much about how you might practically do this to meet the challenges of your project(s).  This is especially important in a world where many organisations are resistant to PRINCE2 because they (incorrectly) perceive it as being overly bureaucratic.

The ability to tailor PRINCE2 in an imperfect world is, therefore, the “secret sauce” behind exceptional project management and is responsible for much of the capability gap you see all too often in qualified Project Managers.
